Layers of Lace

It’s Wednesday and time for the funkie side of the design team to share our projects for the current challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

The current challenge is hosted by team member Autumn who has chosen the theme LAYERS OF LACE …Autumn says, “Lace, oh so lovely lace! Whether you add delicate layers of fine lace, or tattered and torn crocheted lace, we’d love to see you add dimension and depth to your vintage or shabby chic project with lace. Perhaps you have a favorite lace stamp or will choose to lace something up, we’d love to see your creations inspired by this topic.”

Lace always makes me think of fabric and sewing and this gave me the idea of creating a trinket box to store my sewing kit in. Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of lace, or at least I thought I wasn’t when I sat down to make this challenge. Hats off to our fabulous host, Autumn, because I’ve since been doing a little online browsing for vintage lace! Oh Autumn, you’ve created a monster…

I painted the largest of the nest of vignette boxes by Tim Holtz with a layer of gesso inside and out and set aside to dry. Next mixed weathered wood and iced spruce distress paint and applied a layer to the vignette box, again setting aside to air dry.

Once the paint was completely I dry sand portions of the vignette box and lightly rubbed gathered twigs distress crayon on with my finger. Taking some of the new Tim Holtz worn wallpaper, I sanded with a sanding grip, tore the edges and blended in frayed burlap distress ink and then adhered to the sides of the vignette box with distress collage medium.

I added some vintage lace to the bottom edge of the box, added box feet and idea-ology adornments ribbons and bows and vignette accents. In order to get all of the hardware to match, I rubbed a little german silver gilding wax over the top with my finger.

The trinket box lid was made using a vignette frame. I love these new vignette frames, they come in packs of 4 and perfectly match the packs of vignette boxes. I’m going to be stocking up on these for sure! I painted with the same distress paint mix as the base (iced spruce and weathered wood) and set aside to dry. I removed the sandpaper from my sanding grip and gently sanded portions of the frame exposing the wood underneath the dried distress paint. I rubbed gathered twigs distress crayon over parts of the frame.

For the background I created a background wash with iced spruce and hickory smoke distress oxides and frayed burlap and walnut stain distress inks. Using a travel stamp platform, I stamped the dress form from the inventor 3 stamp set (CMS342) and watercoloured parts of the dress form with the iced spruce and hickory smoke distress oxides using a water brush.

The card was mounted under the frame and I used Tim Holtz design tape (renmants) to cover the backside of the vignette frame.

I adhered a piece of worn wall paper to the inside of the vignette box and filled with my sewing kit.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will find time to join in the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Oh my gosh Zoe, I’m both sorry to your pocketbook and happy for your new collection. LOL! I love to find trims on the original cards when we travel and I pop in thrift shops here and there. I have a favorite spot in the mountains nearby and get lots of trims for ten cents each. Can you believe?! I’ve been so inspired by every peek at this amazing box and unpacked my new stamp set like this over the weekend. I just love how this frame looks atop of the vignette box. The peeling wallpaper is my favorite detail. Such a showstopper! Hugs, Autumn

Beautiful sewing box. The worn wallpaper slightly torn and distressed makes such a lovely exterior. The added embellishments give a lovely depth.
