  1. Happy 4th of July

    4th July, 2021 by iGirlZoe

Hello friends and Happy July 4th to my family and friends across the pond. To celebrate with you I’m sharing this July 4th inspired tag that I made for the Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous LIVE launch. If you missed the LIVE, you can catch up on all the fun over on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
Tim definitely had me at hats with this awesome new inquisitive CMS432 stamp set. I immediately thought of Americana and this background tag I made last year was the perfect base for this stamp set. Here’s how I made it…

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
Add painters tape to a small etcetera thickboard tag and paint between the tape with picket fence distress paint. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape and mask the painted area with clean tape, mix candied apple, fired brick and aged mahogany distress paints together and paint. Finally paint the top of the tag with blueprint sketch distress paint and set aside to dry.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
Once completely dry, lightly sand and blend in walnut stain distress ink to the edges and blue section of the tag using a mini blending tool.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
Apply distress crackle texture paste through a stencil (stars THS008) with a palette knife and set aside to dry. Your tag is ready to decorate.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
I stamped the larger “hat dudes” from inquisitive set onto distress watercolor cardstock in black soot distress archival ink… Using the newly released full size ink pads!! I embossed with clear embossing powder and fussy cut. I used 3D adhesive foam to create lift for some of the hat dudes and added some etcetera thickboard trims which I decorated using another stamp from the inquisitive set, for them to rest on.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
I used the bullseye stamp from the inquisitive stamp set and stamped in archival ink. I cut equal sections and then used the awesome Tim Holtz shaping kit from Sizzix to create this Americana bunting rosette.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
I stamped the numbers, again from the inquisitive stamp set and used a circle punch and some mica to create a little token to highlight the 4.

igirlzoe: tim holtz stampers anonymous inquisitive CMS432
Lastly I added July cut from alphanumeric thinlits dies and added some mummy cloth to the top of the tag.

Thanks for stopping by and have a happy and safe 4th of July.

  2. Insect Charging Station

    1st June, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects

Hello Friends. Hope you had a nice weekend. I wanted to share a sample that I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 launch. You can see all of the details on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
Welcome to the funky insect charging station. This is a little tongue in cheek because to know me is to know that I never have a charged battery and often plug my charger in without it being connected to the wall outlet! I know I know… life on the edge LOL! A funny conversation I had in a group chat about my phone battery “sparked” the inspiration for this project (thanks me perps). Funnier still, I forgot to add the indicator circles on the gauges to show where the insects are at in their charging cycle, so you’ll see these red indicator circles appear in photos further down the post.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
Cover an idea-ology vignette tray in gesso and distress texture crackle paste and allow to dry. I covered in a layer of mermaid lagoon distress paint and once dry, scribbled walnut stain distress crayon over the top and blended in with my finger to highlight the texture.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I added distress opaque grit-pate and covered with distress paint to create rust. You don’t need to paint the base of the tray as it will be covered in brickwork. I painted it when it was going to be used for another project and I changed my mind last minute, I do that a lot, but it’s ok, it’s just craft, there are no rules! 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
Using the AWESOME brickwork 3D embossing folder and distress sprays to create the background. Check back this week for a tutorial on this, it’s so incredibly easy and the brickwork looks real because of the pitted detail that the folder creates. I can’t praise this enough, the 3D technology in embossing is just so cool. There’s also a brickwork tutorial on my friend Stacy’s blog Tattered Nest Designs, which is a different method and effect to mine, so definitely check that out.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
Speaking of 3D embossing folders, the circuit folder was a new edition in Chapter 2 and I am obsessed with it. I’m starting to wonder if I can make anything without using it, even a tiny (how tiny) bit! 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
The circuit folder looks fantastic when you emboss alcohol ink foil tape and cover with a layer of black soot distress paint and wipe away. I added paint dots with distress paint and a fine tip paintbrush. It takes a couple of minutes and is really relaxing.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I love the funky insect thinlits dies. They are so simple to assemble, just 2 or 3 pieces and you’re done.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I cut them from alcohol ink foil tape backed with cardstock to make them sturdy and painted with a layer of black soot distress paint, wiping away the excess and then painting the insect body with another colour of distress paint.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
The base layers were all embossed with the circuit 3D embossing folder and mounted on adhesive foam.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I used the letter “O” from the alphanumeric thin thinlits dies (662226), cut from distress watercolor cardstock and covered with candied apple distress paint and a little walnut stain distress crayons to grunge. Using the same letter to die cut mica, I used the inner piece to give the appearance of glass. The gauge dial is cut from the Bigz voltage die and the numbers stamped with the professor 2 stamp set CMS373. You would think that Tim designed this stuff to go together or something. 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I included this photo so you could see the texture that distress opaque grit-paste makes. You have to apply it with your finger to get the really crusty look, but don’t panic!! it comes off with water or a baby wipe.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
I mounted the circuit background to the base of the vignette tray with distress collage medium. Cutting sections of the brickwork, I mounted them with adhesive foam to give a little dimension and show peeks of the circuit background. Adding the insects and gauges to indicate where they are in their charging cycle.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 2 funky insects
Thanks for stopping by. I will be back with a step by step tutorial for this and some other styles of brickwork using the 3D brickwork embossing folder so clear some space on your desk ready to make bricks with me.

  3. Salvaged Patina Sample Vignette

    18th May, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink

Hello friends. Hope you’re having a great week so far. I’m finally catching up on my blogging, just in time to get making again which is the part I love most. Today I’m sharing a “sample vignette” that I made for the LIVE launch of the new distress, Salvaged Patina! If you missed the launch, you can catch up over on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I use the term “sample vignette” because this is like a sampler for things that I wanted to try the salvaged patina distress paint on. I wanted to see how it would look as a “patina” on surfaces such as foil and over distress grit-paste and it did not disappoint!

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I tried out the salvaged patina distress paint on alcohol ink foil tape adhered over distress kraft heavystock, embossed with the new circuit 3D embossing folder. This backdrop worked perfectly well with the mechanical gears and was a chance to see salvaged patina in my natural environment. 😉

(salvaged patina distress paint + walnut stain distress crayon)

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I marked where the tiny lights were going and poked holes through the background. I used adhesive backed foam to create lift to make room for the lights.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Using my dremel micro with the drill attachment, I drilled a hole in the back of the vignette box and thread the tiny lights through the back of the box and up through background.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Mount the background to the back of the vignette box with adhesive backed foam and add gears die cut from the mechanical bigz die and kraft heavystock over the tiny lights.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
To grunge the gears up I added opaque distress grit-paste and set aside to air dry. Once dry, I painted the gears with ground espresso and black soot distress paint and again set aside to dry. Finally I rubbed crackling campfire and salvaged patina distress paint over the dried grit-paste with my finger.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Using a similar technique to the one I just shared on my blog. You will need idea-ology corked tiny vials and will cover in 3 layers allowing to air dry between each. The layers are as follows:
    1. distress collage medium matte – paint on a thin layer with a paintbrush
    2. distress crackle paint clear rock candy – dip the tiny vial into the pot of distress crackle paint or paint on a thick layer with a paintbrush
    3. honeycomb alcohol ink – drip the ink over the tiny vial until completely covered

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I added dots of fossilized amber distress paint onto the circuit 3D embossed background with a paintbrush.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Thanks for stopping by and let me know if you have any questions.

  4. Industrial idea-ology

    14th May, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears

Hello Friends. Hope you’ve had a great week.  Today I’m sharing the final sample I made for the idea-ology LIVE including the “how to” for that crackly lightbulb. If you missed the launch you can catch up on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Industrial, steampunk, gritty grungy goodness is my jam, so when I saw the new idea-ology industrial gears I wept happy tears. The detail is incredible and if altering the idea-ology pieces isn’t your thing, they really are ready to go. I enjoy dinging things up and adding additional grunge, so I altered them a little, but truthfully, they need nothing, the altering is just for fun.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I painted a large idea-ology vignette tray with black soot distress paint ready to cover the back panel with paper from the new idea-ology backdrops volume 2 paper pack. You can catch glimpses of the paper throughout the post.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
These new advert vignette panels are beautiful and fit perfectly in the vignette trays. I used distress re-inker to add colour to the lightbulb before covering the panel with vintage distress collage medium, being careful not to smudge the distress re-inker ink. I mounted this onto adhesive foam so it sat high in the tray. I added hitch fasteners to each corner, using my dremel micro to make the holes.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I used my dremel micro again to drill holes in the top of a vignette box and thread tiny lights through the back of the vignette tray and up through the vignette box, (see next photo). I twisted the lights around themselves so they would fill the flasks and wouldn’t all be grouped in one place. The twisted tiny lights also help to hold the flasks in place.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Once the laboratory flasks were stuck fast to the vignette box, I laid it flat and glued it to the vignette tray. The tiny lights come up through the back of the vignette tray and into the upturned vignette box and up through the top into each flask. NOTE: The tiny lights battery pack was moved aside before gluing down the vignette box.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
To create the faux lights you will need an idea-ology laboratory flask, paintbrush, distress clear rock candy crackle paint and vintage distress collage medium.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Paint a generous layer of the vintage distress collage medium onto the flask and set aside to air dry.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Once completely dry, apply a generous layer of clear rock candy distress crackle paint and set aside to air dry.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Once completely dry, add another 2 layers of vintage distress collage medium, allowing the flask to air dry between layers.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I added florists wire to the base of the flasks and added to the top of the vignette box, over the tiny lights and glued down with distress collage medium.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Then onto the hardware… these new idea-ology industrial gears took my breath away! The detail is insane and I added a little distress grit-paste and distress paint, they really are ready to go.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I also loved the new idea-ology gauge frames (I squealed) and knew immediately that I wanted to create some kind of machine works (with tiny lights of course)! I paired this one with a piece from the urban layers set and that AWESOME piece from the idea-ology odds and ends embellishments pack.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I covered idea-ology apothecary vials with sterling alloy ink and added remnant rubs and copper wire before gluing them to the underside of the upturned vignette box.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
For a final addition, this plaque from the factory tags embellishments pack was mounted onto adhesive foam with long screws from the idea-ology vignette hardware findings pack glued into place to add to the industrial look. It’s all smoke and mirrors. Remember that! 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Thanks for stopping by and have a great Friday.

  5. To Thine Own Self Be True

    12th May, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears

Hello friends. I hope you’re doing well. Today I’m sharing a little something that I made for the Tim Holtz idea-ology 2021 release. If you missed the LIVE, (and to be fair it was a little while ago) you can catch up on all the fun and check out the other makes on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
“To thine own self be true” is my favourite quote from Hamlet. I was certainly true to myself with this make for the idea-ology 2021 launch. It has all the things I love, gears, skulls, tiny lights, bottles, crackle and grunge.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Using a dremel micro with a drill attachment, I made a hole in the cork base of an idea-ology display dome. I used foam circles between my gears, which I made holes in and threaded idea-ology tiny lights through. I carved a line in base of the cork for the tiny lights lead to sit in so the dome sits flat.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I continued to layer the gears, finishing with one of the new idea-ology industrial gears on top, with a little distress grit-paste and distress crayon added, of course! 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
The detail on the new industrial gears is awesome. I mounted it over a circle of metallic kraft stock embossed using the foundry 3D folder to hide the foam divider. I love all the different gear edges. This just makes me happy!

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
To cover the foam dividers I cut strips from idea-ology metallic kraft stock using the lattice trim impresslits folder and added walnut stain distress crayon to grunge them up. The center strip I ran through my die cutting machine a second time to flatten so it would look worn compared to the others.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I added a clock key from the new idea-ology odds and ends embellishments pack. I love these new mixed packs with a little old and a little new mixed in. I also added a skull hoarded from the idea-ology pumpkins and skulls pack with a crown added from the treasures adornments pack.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
The light is an upturned idea-ology laboratory bottle with tiny lights inside,  covered in distress crackle paint and vintage distress collage medium. I used the same bottles on another idea-ology sample I made for the launch and will be sharing that with a “how to” tomorrow Friday.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
I love this idea-ology token from the factory tags set. I added a little distress crayon into the recess and added with distress collage medium.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Finally I added an ephemera piece and idea-ology hardware heads to the cork base, ready to slide on the glass dome.

igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021 gears
Thanks for stopping by and I hope that this has inspired you to make your own display dome light.

  6. Funky Insects

    6th May, 2021 by iGirlZoe

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects

Hello friends. Hope you’re doing well and having a nice week in your part of the world. I’m sharing a make that I created for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 LIVE launch. You can see all the details, makes and LIVE over on Tim’s blog.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
I love the new funky insect (665364) thinlits dies. I used 2 of the 5 bugs on this specimen tag. I went full crackle background with this piece, scroll down to see a crackle texture paste how to…

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
I used a mini etcetera thickboard tag and idea-ology clipboard for this project.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Cover the idea-0logy clipboard and etcetera tag (not pictured) with a layer of speckled egg distress paint and set aside to dry.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Once dry, lightly sand, especially at the edges.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Using a palette knife, add a generous layer of distress crackle texture paste.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Continue adding paste until the background is mostly covered and set aside to dry.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
    Before…

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
    After…

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Rub walnut stain distress crayon into the background with your finger, working it into the cracks and wipe excess from the surface with a damp cloth. The cracked paste may flake off and to that I say “thank you!” You can paint a layer of distress collage medium matte or vintage on top to stop further flaking. The vintage distress collage medium will give a nice vintage tint.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Run alcohol foil tape through your machine with the new 3D circuit embossing folder (665372), adding fossilized amber distress paint to portions of the embossed circuit background. Blend vintage photo distress ink into distress cracked leather cardstock ready to add to the etcetera tag.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Cover the edges of the etcetera thickboard tag with the alcohol foil and cracked leather. I ran more alcohol foil tape through the foundry 3D embossing folder (662717) and added this to the top of the idea-ology clipboard so it had a welded look.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Drill holes where the clipboard will sit and push the long screws from the idea-ology vignette hardware set in through from the back and idea-ology hitch fasteners added to the top.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
This is how your base will look, ready to add your funky insects.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
The funky insects are very easy to put together and each comes on a separate die plate, making it even easier to see which piece goes with which insect.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Die cut circles from the steampunk parts bigz die (664185) cover with distress paint and ink, sanding back and drying between layers for a grunge effect.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
I painted vintage distress collage medium onto the wings of the bee and once dry, rubbed walnut stain over the top to pick up the brush strokes.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
The new Tim Holtz shaping kit to creates real dimension, as used here for this ladybug.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
One of the wings became detached during handling, but it worked perfectly under an idea-ology optical lens with a little frayed burlap distress to colour the solo wing.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
I love the alphanumeric tiny type upper thinlits dies (664406).

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Finally, I added some leather and silk cord, bent to look like insect antenna.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz funky insects
Thanks for stopping by and have a great rest of your week.

  7. Salvaged Patina

    29th April, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink

Hello friends. Did you meet the new member of the distress family? Salvaged Patina made it’s debut on Saturday during the LIVE launch on Tim Holtz YouTube channel. If you missed the party, you can catch up on all the fun over on Tim’s blog.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
It’s no secret that I’m a total fangirl of distress and so I was very very excited to receive Salvaged Patina ahead of the launch to make some samples. The turnaround deadline was quite tight so I didn’t have time to do full step outs, but hopefully the photos and description will be helpful. Ok lets go…

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Using the Perspective Butterfly (665201) thinlits set, I die cut distress watercolor cardstock. As this is an intricate die, I used a chrome plate. Sprayed the butterfly with frayed burlap and crackling campfire distress sprays and salvaged patina oxide spray. I added opaque distress grit-paste and once dry rubbed salvaged patina distress paint over the raised areas with my finger.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I added some of the new idea-ology floral linen tape to the mini thickboard etcetera tag, covering the edges of the tape with translucent distress grit-paste.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Once dry, I covered the entire tag with a layer of gesso, set aside to air dry, then painted on a layer of vintage distress collage medium and again set aside to air dry. Once completely dry, I rubbed walnut stain distress crayon over the dried translucent grit-paste and to the edges of the tag and the idea-ology floral linen tape.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I stamped the background stamp from ledger background CMS410 stamp set in hickory smoke distress archival ink to the bottom and top of the etcetera tag. I sprayed salvaged patina distress spray stain over the top and blotted with a cloth leaving a slight hint of colour which allows salvaged patina to look very vintage when washed out.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I covered an idea-ology key with gesso and added translucent distress grit-paste  and once dry added salvaged patina distress paint to the raised areas. You can see the salvaged patina distress embossing glaze underneath. Using salvaged patina oxide ink underneath, it looks like lican.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
I used the alphanumeric tiny type upper (664406) thinlits dies and idea-ology kraft stock stack to die cut ‘SALVAGED PATINA”. Finally adding a piece of idea-ology warm velvet trim secured with a long fastener.

igirlzoe: tim holtz salvaged patina distress ranger ink
Thanks for stopping by. Hope you’re having a good week and let me know if you have any questions.

  8. idea-ology 2021

    12th March, 2021 by iGirlZoe

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021

Hello friends. Hope you’ve had a good week and found some time to make. I’m sharing a sample I made for the Tim Holtz idea-ology LIVE launch a couple of weeks ago. The new idea-ology range is amazing! Every year it’s even better than the last. What particularly floored me this year was that Tim continued to raise the bar with incredible products whilst navigating a global pandemic. If you missed the launch, you can catch up on all the fun over on Tim’s blog.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
This is a super easy make, I promise. I took a medium etcetera thickboard tag and covered with 2 sheets of the black (of course) kraft-stock. Tim revealed an exciting secret about the black kraft-stock, watch the launch video for more details. As you will know, I’m a huge fan of kraft-stock and I was excited to try the new smooth kraft-stock stack and I am SOLD! It sands like a dream and the colour palette is gorgeous. I also love the new size. Once I sanded the edges you couldn’t see the join where the 2 sheets met.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
I added a piece from the new paper line – Backdrops volume 2. I spent the longest time looking through these papers and there is a special sheet that I have plans for and will share more about in another post. This beautiful vintage 10×6 paper inspired my entire make. I picked up some antique linen distress ink droplets to make it a little more grungy and mounted onto the tag using adhesive foam.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
I added a clip from the idea-ology vintage clips. Adding a little picket fence distress paint, dry brushing evergreen bough distress paint on and finally rubbing a little walnut distress crayon over the top and a new idea-ology hook clasp attached.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
Next I die cut a typewriter using the retro type die (664422) that was released last year. I die cut from the new kraft-stock and sanded. I added metallic kraft-stock to parts of the typewriter and blended in walnut stain distress ink. Adding idea-ology long fasteners as keys for the typewriter which I bashed with my texture hammer. I highly recommend this, it’s a great lockdown stress reliever. This clever idea to use long fasteners for keys was Tim’s, so thanks to him for suggesting it. Craft friends are the best!

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
I added a piece of adhesive foam to the back of the typewriter under the keys and pushed the long fasteners through each key before folding back. I peeled the backing off the foam, it just tears away from the fasteners too, ready to stick in place and giving it some nice dimension to tuck other things under.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
I added the fabric piece to the typewriter and the 3 x’s (which I adore) from the stitched scraps 2, which was attached with an idea-ology mini pin. I used a type chip, I absolutely love these, added a couple of gears from the new industrial gears, YES, I am OBSESSED, they are 100% my jam and I love the detail. I added a little translucent distress grit-paste and distress paint to grunge them up.

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
This piece of flair with underwood from the mini flair set was perfectly themed. I added it over the top of a couple of tags from the salvaged tags set and added a paint brush for no other reason than it rolled onto my tag and I liked the way it looked so I painted the handle and glued it down! There are no rules! 😉

    igirlzoe: tim holtz idea-ology 2021
Thanks for stopping by and please let me know if you have any questions. A big thank you to Tim, Paula and Mario for being such a kind, supportive and fun crew to make for. Don’t forget to head over to Tim’s blog and take a look at all of the amazingly talented makers samples and the new idea-ology.

Have a great weekend and see you for the Saturday LIVE tomorrow on Tim’s YouTube channel and don’t forget your snacks.

  9. The Park

    2nd March, 2021 by iGirlZoe

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline

Hello Friends. I hope you’re well. Can you believe that it’s already March?! I’ve been so busy that I’m not sure February happened but I am finally getting caught up with my blogging.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline
This home decor piece I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 1 release using one of my favourite dies from that release, The Park (665204). I imagined the opening scene of Mary Poppins when the East wind blows her in over the rooftops of Cherry Tree Lane with her open umbrella.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline
I started with an etcetera thickboard tag – small, which I covered with a layer of picket fence distress paint wash (just spritz water onto distress paint and mix with a paintbrush). It will be absorbed into the tag so you can still see some of the kraft poking through, which I like. I stamped the music strip stamp from the poinsettia CMS426 stamp set with hickory smoke distress archival ink. Once dry I spread distress crackle texture paste through the sparkle stencil THS132 and set aside to dry and crack.

I die cut distress watercolor cardstock and idea-ology metallic kraftstock from the cityscape skyline thinlits die set (661810). I sprayed the watercolor cardstock die cuts with black soot distress spray and dried. I sanded the metallic kraft-stock die cuts and blended in walnut stain distress ink. I mounted the watercolor cardstock over the metallic kraft-stock, offsetting slightly to create a drop shadow. I used a little adhesive foam to give the cityscape some dimension.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline
I drilled a hole through the etcetera tag using a Dremel micro tool and the mini drill accessories kit. I make sure the hole is big enough to pull tiny lights through from the back of the tag.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline
I attach the battery pack to the back of the tag so it’s out the way, making sure the batter pack opening is toward you. I used velcro strips to attach mine but you could use double sided adhesive tape or distress collage medium.  TIP * Don’t attach it to the back until you’ve finished your project or it will sit unevenly on your work surface.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 the park alphanumeric stretch upper cityscape skyline
I die cut a large circle from distress watercolor cardstock and sprayed lightly with antique linen distress spray and water. Blended in hickory smoke distress ink to the edges. I put adhesive foam squares around the underside of the moon creating a ring for the lights to sit inside. I gathered the lights into the center of where the moon was going to be and then placed the moon down, carefully tucking in any lights attempting to escape. I used adhesive foam to add the the park die cut. The umbrella comes separately so I added it to her hand with distress collage medium and put adhesive foam under the top of the umbrella.

It created this pretty firefly type effect behind the watercolor cardstock and raised the moon up enough to fit the lights and give the tag dimension.

Next I added the letters “MP” which will now forever more be “Mario Poppins” after Tim called it out during the LIVE! I die cut idea-ology blackout and metallic kraft-stock with the new alphanumeric stretch upper thinlits dies (665206) I added these with distress collage medium.

I added some rope ribbon from my stash to the top of the tag to finish.

With the tiny lights switched off.

When you break it down into sections, this is actually a simple piece to make and you could adapt it and make it smaller to fit onto a card. I hope this inspires you to try and make something yourself.

Hello Friends. Welcome to the first day of the new week. Today I’m sharing a sample I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 1 release. If you missed the LIVE you can catch up with all the action on Tim’s blog.

I love this submarine from the wacky transport 1 thinlits die set (665220). It made me think of the little subs from the beginning of the Titanic movie, which inspired me to light it up.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I painted an etcetera thickboard tag with speckled egg distress paint and once dry, sanded some of the paint away.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
Using the bubbling thinlits die set (665211) to die cut distress watercolor cardstock.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I cut twice and mounted one on top of the other to give some depth and sprayed with frayed burlap distress stain and blended in pumice stone distress ink.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
Then glued it on with matte distress collage medium and trimmed to the edge of the tag.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I die cut some more submarines and pulled through a frayed burlap distress ink wash and cut them. Also die cutting some greenery from the holiday greens mini thinlits dies (661597).

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I blended in various distress inks, the frayed burlap background wash creates dark patches under the distress ink and makes it looks aged.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I added opaque distress grit-paste and painted with frayed burlap and pumice stone distress paint.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I placed the submarines like wreckage at the bottom of the tag and fixed into place with adhesive foam and tucked greenery in between. I think the grit-paste looks like barnacles.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I drilled a hole in the back of the etcetera tag using my dremel micro tool and fed idea-ology tiny lights through, trimming excess from the open end of the strand. I mounted the submarine onto adhesive foam over the tiny lights.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I added vellum to the underside of the sub for frosted windows to hide the tiny lights.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I stamped the octopus from the sea life stamp set CMS304. Yes I fussy cut this, it’s a fussy cutting nightmare and I enjoy fussy cutting but so worth it. But please Sizzix, PLEASE, could we have a framelits die for this sucka. 😉

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I added some white and glitter pen highlights to the suckers and mounted onto adhesive foam.

igirlzoe: tim holtz sizzix chapter 1 bubbles wacky transport
I stamped glitch CMS405 stamps onto the side of the submarine after I had mounted it. I put the entire tag onto my large stamp platform and stamped and fortunately it worked out.

This would be a really fun home decor make for a kids room and you could add more lights to the wreckage at the bottom of the tag.

    Thanks for stopping by.
