  1. Frilly & Funkie Enjoy Your Embossing

    3rd February, 2016 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Jenny (Pushing The Right Buttons), who has chosen the theme ENJOY YOUR EMBOSSING …Jenny says, “For this one you need to make a vintage or shabby chic project of your choice and remember to include some embossing. Use your favourite embossing methods (wet, dry, heat, or any other techniques you want to share) – just enjoy your embossing!

iGirlZoe: Enjoy Your EmbossingI created 2 tags using both heat and dry embossing. I cut hearts with the Sizzix heartfelt bigz die by Tim Holtz. The tag backgrounds were created by cutting manila and kraft surface with the framleits tag die and lightly tapping a Tim Holtz background stamp and covering with embossing powder. I used clear powder over potting soil archival ink by Wendy Vecchi on the manila tag and silver embossing powder over distress embossing ink on the black kraft surface. I stitched the edges of both tags and attached a wordband that had been alcohol inked, with twine.

    iGirlZoe: Enjoy Your Embossing
To create this heart, I used the faux graniteware starter kit and archival inks by Wendy Vecchi. I added Tim Holtz idea-ology gears with alcohol ink applied to give an aged look. This was mounted onto the new idea-ology adhesive backed textile surface by Tim Holtz, which I stitched.

    iGirlZoe: Enjoy Your Embossing
The second tag I dry embossed the foil covered heart with Tim Holtz Gears texture fades folder. I used the technique demonstrated in last months 12 tags of 2016 and added cracked pistachio distress paint and alcohol inks to create a faux patina. This was again mounted onto the new idea-ology adhesive backed textile surface by Tim Holtz, which I lightly inked and stitched.

    iGirlZoe: Enjoy Your Embossing
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will find time to join in the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  2. Frilly & Funkie Sing, Sing, Sing

    21st January, 2016 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Cec (CW Card Creations), who has chosen the theme SING, SING, SING …Cec says, “Make a shabby chic or vintage project with music as the central theme. You can add musical instruments, music paper, sentiments about music or even vintage images with a music theme.”

iGirlZoe: Sing Sing SingCec’s challenge theme immediately made me think of bird song. I live right next to a park and love hearing the birds chirping away.

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
I created the background and some embellishments with Tim Holtz wallflower paper stash. Altered one of the new idea-ology wall hangers with picket fence distress paint. Added remnant rubs to the label, overlaid with an epoxy sticker and adhered to the faceplate. Rubbed leftover picket fence paint over idea-ology boxwood twine and adhered to the top with hot glue. I adhered the background onto a piece of embossed cardboard painted with picket fence distress paint and inked with vintage photo distress.

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
After adding some music washi tape, small talk stickers and lace trim, I had just about finished. A little last sanding and the background RIPPED!!! I sat for a few moments wishing for a “click undo” button and then set about “fixing it” …aka making it worse!

I inked, spritzed, misted, rubbed, tried to cover with rubons (they wouldn’t adhere). Then the lightbulb moment…

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
Texture paste was the answer! Texture paste is always the answer! It covers a multitude of sins, adheres to just about any surface and with a little distress re inker… can be any colour you like! I chose weathered wood so it would match the eggs I had stamped with weathered wood distress ink with the Tim Holtz nature walk stamp set.

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
Using a palette knife I spread texture paste through the numbered stencil. I chose “16” to mark the new year.

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
Once thoroughly dry I placed the stencil back over the texture paste and stamped with the overlay stamp from nature walk set that I used to put the spots on the eggs. I actually love the ’16’ so let’s call it a happy accident. 😉

    iGirlZoe: Sing Sing Sing
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will find time to join in the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  3. Frilly & Funkie Holiday Hues

    6th January, 2016 by iGirlZoe

Happy New Year! It’s Wednesday and we’re back after a short break with another challenge over at the Frilly & Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Pamellia (My Little Craft Things), who has chosen the theme HOLIDAY HUES …Pamellia says “I would like to see your favourite colours for your favourite holiday. Choose whatever holiday you like, just make sure your project is shabby chic or vintage in style.”

    iGirlZoe: Holiday Hues
Christmas is my absolute favourite holiday! This is a snapshot from instagram of my Christmas spent in the Swiss mountains above Gruyere with my Husband and a couple of friends.

iGirlZoe: Holiday HuesAs the Funkie side of the design team’s post wasn’t until the new year, I thought it would be nice to make a thank you card as an extension of my favourite holiday.

    iGirlZoe: Holiday Hues
I used a mini cabinet card to frame a found relatives card and added remnant rubs. I stamped the cabinet card with potting soil archival ink and stamps from Tim Holtz Documented stamp set.

    iGirlZoe: Holiday Hues
I used my sewing machine to stitch portions of the tag and wrapped red cotton around an adornment arrow and adhered with hot glue. The red cotton around the arrow was inspired by an awesome project by Paula Cheney.

    iGirlZoe: Holiday Hues
I added ephemera from the expedition ephemera pack and used the framelits tags die set to cut a tag from kraft cardstock and a hole reinforcer from sticky back canvas which was inked with walnut stain and vintage photo distress inks. I die cut “Thanks” from faux leather and adhered to the card. I mounted the project onto fabric and faux leather to give the card lots of texture and layers.

    iGirlZoe: Holiday Hues
I hope you will join the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  6. Frilly & Funkie An Altered State

    25th November, 2015 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Cec (CW Card Creations), who has chosen the theme AN ALTERED STATE …Cec Says,“It is time to transform something you have sitting around or can pick up for a song and make it one of your works of art. It could be a frame, a bottle, an old cigar box, a discarded CD – the list is endless. Just make sure your final transformation is vintage or shabby chic.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
This is such a busy time of year for many of us, so I decided to make a gift box that I could use to wrap a Christmas gift.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
I had kept this box because it was such a great size, but the corners of the lid were broken. I fixed this using idea-ology box corners, (see further down).

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
I covered the box with 2 generous layers of gesso. This prepares the surface for the glue n seal and distress paint, and stops the cardboard from getting soggy.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
Brush glue n seal over the box, working quickly as it dries fast! Cover with tissue wrap and scrunch. Once dry, rub distress paint on with your fingers and spritz with water. You can see the step-by-step technique on Tim Holtz’s Blog.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
I brushed with a final coat of glue n seal. From a distance it looks like scrunched up shot silk fabric.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
Line the inside of the box with paper. I used paper from the new Tim Holtz yuletide paper stash.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
Line the inside of the box lid with the same paper.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
I coloured idea-ology box corners with gold alcohol ink and attached to the corners of the box lid with hot glue, (this fixed the broken corners). I cut Merry Christmas with the Tim Holtz handwritten holidays die from gold metallic kraft core. The words got lost with the gold tones of the box, so I applied black alcohol ink with an alcohol ink blending pen. Using the pen it gives a lighter coverage and it turned the gold kraft core metallic brown.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
I cut holly from metallic kraft core cardstock with the Tim Holtz holiday greens thinlits die. I LOVE these dies, you can emboss detail onto the leaves! So cool! I covered these cute miniature pincones with picket fence distress paint and the even cuter miniature bells with fired brick distress paint, (both I bought from The Funkie Junkie Boutique). I attached them with hot glue. The bells give a lovely jingle when you pick up the box.

    iGirlZoe: An Altered State
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will find time to join in the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  7. Frilly & Funkie Let There Be Light

    11th November, 2015 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Sue (Stamping Sue Style), who has chosen the theme LET THERE BE LIGHT …Sue Says,“One of the things I don’t like at this time of year is the lack of light to craft by in the evenings. So, for this challenge I’d like you to include something in your project that makes reference to light, this could be a lamp, lantern, rays of light or even gradients of colour that get lighter!”

iGirlZoe: Let There Be LightIt’s no secret that I’m a big fan of this season! It really is the most wonderful time of the year and one of my favourite parts is the Christmas tree. The twinkling lights and glittering decorations compensate for the dark days we get in Europe over the winter. I decided to try my hand at altering an assemblage clock with this theme.

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
If you follow me on instagram you may have seen my post about taking the clock apart whilst watching Homeland! I was left with a pile of nuts, bolts, washers and no clue what went where!

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
I covered the exterior parts of the clock with ground espresso distress paint and set aside to dry. Then rubbed evergreen bough distress paint over the top with my finger and set aside to dry. I tapped an embossing ink pad over the top and sprinkled over clear rock candy distress glitter and set aside to harden before assembling.

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
Fortunately I managed to assemble the clock with only one washer leftover! 😉

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
For the interior of the clock, I followed the digital download instructions that I bought from Tim Holtz Etsy shop.

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
Initially I had a bit of an epic fail with the trophy antlers! I dripped alcohol ink over the stag’s head which reacted with the resin and turned it salmon pink! YUK! I decided the best way to cover it was with dark distress paint. As I was using the ground espresso distress paint to cover the clock, I covered the trophy antler too and set aside to dry. It was so dark that you couldn’t see the lovely details of the stag so I rubbed a little evergreen bough distress paint over the top with my finger. This highlighted the detail and gave a cool faux patina effect.

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
I rubbed glossy accents over some boxwood twine and sprinkled over clear rock candy distress glitter. It gives a really nice frosted effect. I attached the boxwood twine, trophy antlers, natural pinecone and some mini dollhouse Christmas lights to the top of the clock with hot glue.

    iGirlZoe: Let There Be Light
I used icicles from the limited edition seasonal frozen alpha parts, (covered in distress glitter of course), on the front of the insert mount. I wrapped a Christmas tree banner from the festive ephemera pack around one of the woodland trees.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will find time to join in the challenge and pop over to Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and the assemblage clock digital download instructions are available to buy from Tim Holtz Etsy shop.

  8. Frilly & Funkie Something Wicked

    28th October, 2015 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and that means there’s another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Shelly (Stamptramp), who has chosen the theme SOMETHING WICKED …Shelly Says,“With Halloween just a few days away, I decided to challenge you all to create Something Wicked. Whether your style is shabby or vintage, I want to see your spookiest work. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Halloween related – feel free to interpret the theme in a way that suits you!

iGirlZoe: Something WickedVintage Halloween is right up my street and this guy, from Tim Holtz found relatives cards, is as spooky as it gets.

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
Initially I was going to mount him in card form under the ornate frame but he didn’t look right. I wanted him to look more ghostly, which is when I had a lightbulb moment and decided to use a transfer technique with multi medium matte onto clear packaging. Here’s how…

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
Ingredients: clear packaging, multi medium matte and found relative cards.

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
    Fussy cut the image.

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
As the cards are plastic coated you will need to carefully peel the back layer off , (otherwise the water won’t permeate the paper later).

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
Cover the front of the image with a generous layer of multi medium, not thick globs, but a good covering. Place adhesive side down onto your clear plastic and leave to dry, (the longer the better).

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
Once completely dry, spray the back of the image with water and leave for a few moments for the water to soak into the paper. Then start to gently rub the paper with your finger. You will get pulp and a milky residue. Keep spraying and rubbing until all the paper is gone. (I got so into this that I forgot to take an after photo).

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
Die cut an ornate frame from grungeboard and cover with a layer of black distress paint and dry. Mount the clear plastic onto the top of the frame with a little glossy accents. Die cut a second frame as before. This time after the black soot distress paint has dried, sand and blend in some vintage photo distress ink. Lay the second die cut over the top of the first and adhere with glossy accents. The image now sits between the frames and above the burlap panel. This allows light underneath the image so you can see the red eyes. (For the eyes, I dabbed a pin head of alcohol ink onto the underside of the plastic before mounting).

    iGirlZoe: Something Wicked
The bottles are die cut from grungeboard and covered with distress paint, sanded and blended with distress ink and then covered with glossy accents. The corks are cut from cork. The wicked aplpha part is covered with multi medium matte and foiled with Ranger foil transfer sheets. I added rubs from the curiosities remnant rubs sheet here and there.

Thanks for stopping by and take a look at the Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used for this project are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  9. Frilly & Funkie Autumn Splendor

    14th October, 2015 by iGirlZoe

It’s Wednesday and that means there’s another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Nancy (Tattered Treasures), who has chosen the theme AUTUMN SPLENDOR …Nancy Says,“Simply create a vintage or shabby chic project using the rich colors of autumn, and remember to include an autumn leaf somewhere in your project!

iGIrlZoe: Autumn SplendorFor this challenge I decided to use a burlap panel! What can I say? I love the burlap panels! This was so quick and easy to make that I did a quick step-by-step.

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Take an idea-ology burlap panel and scrape white gesso across random parts of it with a palette knife to create a worn look, (there’s no need to gesso the center but I found it was easier to cover than avoid). Once completely dry, dab a little antique linen distress paint over the gesso areas that will show.

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Cut a panel of paper about half an inch smaller than the canvas, I used the new Tim Holtz regions beyond paper stash. This paper is forever, not just for Halloween! It’s limited though so I am stocking up like a crazy person crafter!

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Next cut a panel of mixed media cardstock about half an inch smaller than the paper panel. Blend a little antique linen distress ink, spritz with water and dry. Mix a few drops of ground espresso distress reinker to texture paste and mix with a palette knife. Spread the texture paste through the stencil and set aside to air dry.

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Cut a medium leaf from mixed media cardstock and a small leaf from metallic kraft core using the new Tim Holtz fall foliage dies. Cut a larger leaf from mixed media cardstock with the layered leaf die and emboss using the accompanying embossing folder. Using a selection of autumnal (fall) distress ink colours. Slowly blend from light to dark, building the colour until you’re happy with the leaf. Spritz lightly with water to blend and dry with a heat tool. Swipe a darker colour over the embossed areas to highlight if desired.

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Your leaves are now ready to attach to your canvas. Layer them up and secure with a dab of glossy accents. Pull a few burlap strands from the back of the burlap canvas and use to tie around the leaf stems. Attach a word band underneath. I used “observations” as I love to “observe” the leaves changing colour during this season.

    iGIrlZoe: Autumn Splendor
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you’ll have a go at making something Autumnal for this challenge. You can see the other DT projects over at Frilly and Funkie challenge blog. All the products I used for this project are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

  10. Frilly & Funkie Chalk It Up

    30th September, 2015 by iGirlZoe

I’m excited to share my first project as part of the design team over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

This challenge is hosted by Shelly Hickox (Stamptramp), who has chosen the theme CHALK IT UP …Shelly Says,”Chalk is such a versatile medium and we want to see how you can use it in your vintage or shabby chic creations. You can choose faux chalk technique, chalk inks, powdered chalks, or even a stick of chalk – it’s up to you!

    iGirlZoe: Chalk It Up
I chose the faux chalk technique using antiquities frosted embossing powder on a frame mounted to an altered Tim Holtz idea-ology burlap panel. My current design obsession is apothecary, so I wanted to create a little vintage pharmacy.

    iGirlZoe: Chalk It Up
The apothecary bottles and tiny vials from Tim Holtz’s idea-ology range are my absolute favourtie, so I had to use some. The burlap panel is the perfect depth to stand the bottles. I covered some with alcohol inks and some with distress crackle paint. The labels are from the apothecary vials set. The frame, label pull label and signage behind the bottles were stamped with stamps from the undertaker set.

    iGirlZoe: Chalk It Up
I took inspiration from Paula Cheney by trimming the burlap and covering the edges with paper. For some final touches, I added an idea-ology clock key to the side of the burlap frame and an idea-ology heirloom rose covered with alcohol ink on a fussy cut found relatives card.

Thanks for stopping by and take a look at the Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the rest of the DT’s projects. All the products I used for this project are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.
